Remarkable Term 3 achievements of Rondebosch High School:

Swimming: Taylor Luck (Matric) has been selected to compete for South Africa at the 9th World Junior Swimming Championships to be held in Netanya, Israel, from the 4th – 9th September 2023. Congratulations, Taylor!

Cycling: Congratulations to Kael Williams (Grade 8) who represented Western Province at the recent SA Cycling Road Championships held in East London on 7-9 July 2023. He achieved a bronze medal in the national road race, with Western Province winning overall.

National Schools Jazz Band: We are incredibly proud that two of our boys were selected to form a part of the National Schools Jazz Band for 2023. Conducted by Marc de Kock (RBHS Music Department), Ethan Holgate (Matric) is on the trumpet while James Ford (Grade 10) is the vocalist.

Chess: Gabriel Jacobson (Grade 11) participated in the Western Province closed chess tournament towards the end of the second term and won both the U20 and U18 sections. As well as 2 trophies, he also received a gold medal. Congratulations Gabriel!

Hockey: A number of our boys took part in various ITP tournaments during the June/July holiday’s in different age groups as well as different sporting codes. Following these, special congratulations must go to two of our hockey players for being selected to National teams:

  1. Daniel Fisher (Grade 9) was selected to the SA U16B team
  2. Luca Miller (Grade 12) was selected to the SA U18B team

Afrikaans ATKV-Olimpiade: Two grade 11 learners, Bernard Lombard and Etienne Toerien, placed 2nd and 25th repsectively in the Western Cape. This is an excellent result with 300 participants having competed.

Western Cape Hockey: Zach Hillman and Liam Daames (Grade 8) were selected to represent the U14 WC hockey tournament in Benoni, Johannesburg which was held in the July school holidays. Their team won Silver to the Free State following penalty show-downs. Congratulations Zach and Liam!

Cricket: Two of our talented U16 cricketers, all-rounder Daniel Bosman, and fast bowler Hlumelo Mgweba, recently went up to Pretoria at the Cricket South Africa Centre of Excellence for the weekend. They were invented to attend this prestigious camp as part of the U17 Talent Acceleration Programme.

Springbok Scout: A massive congratulations to Luke Foord (Grade 12) who has been awarded with the Springbok Scout Award! The Springbok award is the highest award achievable by any Scout in South Africa. This award is the equivalent of the UK’s Queen’s Scout and the American Eagle Scout. Among the requirements, the Scout must complete at least 40 hours of community service, lead a hike of over 30km in unfamiliar territory, and plan and construct a pioneering project (Luke built a suspension bridge in Keurboom park as can be seen in the photos). Very few scouts reach this level and it requires special dedication to get there. Well done Luke!

Western Cape Gymnastics: A massive congratulations to Noa Duxbury (Grade 8) who competed at the Western Cape Gymnastics Championships towards the end of August. Noa was awarded a gold medal and achieved his Western Cape Colours in tumbling. He will also be representing the WC and competing at the SA champs at the end of September in Gauteng.

The Drama Department performed three spectacular sold-out shows of DISTRICT SIX: THE PLAY, an adaptation of the highly acclaimed musical “District Six” written by Taliep Petersen and David Kramer. Well done to the cast and crew for the phenomenal work they did! Photo credit: Mark Blake
