After a long game drought, Merensky High School was teaming with activity on 29 July. All the rugby teams played in the Noordvaal Cup league against visitors from Hoërskool Dr Malan, all the way from Meyerton.
The u.14s were first on the field. The A team prevailed with a narrow 14-12 victory, while the B team got bogged down with a close 14-15 score.
The u.15 teams did a good job, although the A team lost the battle in the dying moments of the game with a score of 16-18. The B team’s match was interesting in that the Dokkies withdrew their team, but still played a match with the help of Merensky players in order to still offer the boys an opportunity to play rugby. The winning score was 40-0 in Plasieland’s favour.
Both the u.16 teams played vivid running rugby. The A team won with 40-0 while the B team walked off the field with a whopping 76-0 on the score board.
The matches of the 2nd and 3rd teams provided nail-biting moments. The 3rds triumphed with 19–7 while the 2nds proudly left the field with 24-12 on the scoreboard.
Merensky Agricultural Academy’s blue pride 1st team played excellent running rugby, with their defense an impenetrable blue wall. They sent Dr Malan back to the dressing room with a 64-5 score, after tries by Ulrich Maré (3), Hardus Terblanche (2), Ruan Marcos, Tirelo Mashapa, Zander Heydenrych, Clifford Ledwaba and Caleb Mokgalaotse. Byron Hendricks’ kicking boot ensured no less than 7 conversions for the team.
Friend and foe are invited to gather again at Plasiepark on 5 August, for yet more league matches against Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom.
