Innovation encourages creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. In support of Innovation Day (16 February), Clifton School acknowledges the vital role that innovation plays in opening doors to new technologies, inventions, and careers for our younger generation of future nation builders. “We provide coding in our Information Technology lessons from Grade R through to Grade 7 which compliments the programming elements in Robotics classes. Our grade 6’s and 7’s do Robotics as part of their curriculum and we also offer Robotics and Coding holiday clinics,” says Robyn Schlemmer – Head of Grade 6 and Head of Design & Technology.

While communication via the spoken and written word in the formative school years is vital, coding is also a form of communication that encourages children to be creative, solve problems, collaborate and engage with peers, and to use critical thinking. “The Foundation and Senior Prep phase is an ideal time to introduce computer technology to children. Understanding the principles of Coding and Robotics will stand each child in good stead for the future,” says Schlemmer.

Clifton School incorporate STEAM resources like LEGO SPIKE Prime sets into their Robotics classes. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. “Our Robotics classes provide multi-sensory experiences in coding, encourage critical thinking and teach our boys skills that extend beyond the classroom, preparing them for the workforce of the future,” concludes Schlemmer.
