Curro Hazeldean outperforms at National Top 14  Athletics Competition. Celebrations are still in full swing at Curro Hazeldean in Pretoria East after the athletics team outperformed several other schools at the North vs South National Top 14 Athletics Competition earlier this month. Hosted at Paarl Boys High in the Western Cape, the event is a highlight of the school sporting calendar, bringing together fourteen schools that possess some of the best athletic talents in the country.

“I am so proud of all the athletes that participated in the athletics competition. We have been working hard behind the scenes, putting together our five-year Strategic Athletic High-Performance Programme. This essentially outlines the ways we intend to help train and equip our learners with the most up-to-date skills and experience they need to be able to step up in the competitive world of school sports. The phenomenal achievement at this competition is testament to the success of this programme,” says Pierre le Roux, Executive Head at Curro Hazeldean.

Worthy mentions who helped put Curro well and truly on the athletics map were 17-year-old Tshepo Tyantini and 15-year-old Zattu Hlongwane. Despite a cold, windy evening with wet grass at low altitude, both boys were on a triumphant roll with Tyantini coming in first in both the boys under 17s 100 and 200 metre sprints, scoring a sterling time of 10.72 seconds in the 100-metres. Hlongwane on the other hand took home a double gold in the under 15s leg after scoring a fantastic 10.95 second race time in the 100 metres. As the “new kid on the block”, Curro Hazeldean outperformed their competitors, placing second overall, with only 60 points between them and 1st place Paarl Gymnasium.
