The Balderstone Sports Institute Football Academy in Modderfontein hosted The OBC Ubungani Cup, a youth football invitational tournament, held on Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 December 2022. The annual event’s aim is to provide U19 footballers with a platform to showcase their talent and create scouting opportunities. BSI Football Academy’s partnership with SC Farense in Portugal, brings the head scout from the Portuguese club to identify talent
for their U23 team.

The 2022 OBC Ubungani Cup, included eight teams, with the squad of the BSI Football Academy competing alongside African giants Mamelodi Sundowns & Orlando Pirates, The University of Johannesburg, Highlands Park FC, Easterns League Football Association Invitational, Kappa Invitational and from Zambia, Kafue Celtic FC. The tournament was hotly contested, with Kafue Celtic FC and Highlands Park FC meeting in the final. The tight and tense affair ended goalless and required penalties to differentiate 1st & 2nd place. Kafue Celtic FC came out tops and were crowned OBC Ubungani Cup Champions 2022. SC Farense head scout, Nuno Barroca, awarded the Player of the Tournament to Frank Chileshe from Kafue Celtic FC.

BSI Football Academy co-founder Zeca Marques summarized the tournament as: “A unique football experience to create a platform for African talent and open doors within the continent and into Europe. Our partnership with SC Farense and the South African network places the BSI Football Academy in a position to provide our students and the broader community with opportunities to further their careers in football.” Along with their sponsors, OBC Butchery, the BSI Football Academy aims to strengthen the credibility of South African Football in the global market and the 2023 tournament will look to build on the successes of this year and leave South African football in a better place than they found it.
