The Laerskool Stulting Primary Grade 3’s had loads of fun learning how to make pizza

The Laerskool Stulting Primary Grade 3’s had loads of fun learning how to write down a recipe (How to make a pizza) in Afrikaans and English and integrating it with Maths by learning about fractions too. What better way to learn than whilst eating? Today, we even got to taste Halal pizza that two of our learners brought to school. Learning about other cultures is really special. The history of pizza begins in antiquity when various ancient cultures produced basic flatbreads with several toppings.

A precursor of pizza was probably the focaccia, a flat bread known to the Romans as Latin: panis focacius, to which toppings were then added. Modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples, Italy, in the 18th or early 19th century. The word pizza was first documented in A.D. 997 in Gaeta and successively in different parts of Central and Southern Italy. Pizza was mainly eaten in Italy and by emigrants from there. This changed after World War II when allied troops stationed in Italy came to enjoy pizza along with other Italian foods.

Thanks for the quick little history lesson, Kiddle.co! Could you imagine a world without pizza? Of course not! Especially after a long day in the classroom. Pizza makes any day feel a whole lot better! We explored fractions by cutting our WHOLE pizza into TWO EQUAL HALVES, and then into FOUR EQUAL QUARTERS. Some of our marvellous mini-mathematicians even took it a step further and cut their pizzas into eighths! This was such a simple and exciting way to bring fractions to life for our inquisitive little learners. We then learnt how to read a recipe and thereafter wrote down the recipe too, in detail with the correct layout and what fun it was! Teachers, as you know, children learn best when they actively participate in the learning process. By integrating real life skills or real life items and combining them with Mathematical concepts, we create a dynamic learning environment that captivates young minds. Special thanks to Debonairs for coming to work early this morning to make sure all 81 of our pizzas were baked and ready!
