The stage was set, the notes were tuned and a splendid display of musical unity unfolded within the walls of Curro Durbanville Primary School as the school hosted its annual Choir Festival on Wednesday, 16 August. A celebration of melodious voices and collaborative effort, the festival showcased the exceptional talents of learners from Curro schools across the province including Brackenfell, Century City, Langebaan, Somerset West, Burgundy, Mossel Bay and the host, Durbanville.

The choirs transformed the evening into a harmonious journey through various musical genres. The selection of enchanting songs, thoughtfully curated to showcase the diversity of talents among the participating schools, resonated with the audience and elicited resounding applause. The heartwarming camaraderie between the choirs reached its pinnacle during the grand finale, where learners from all the participating schools joined their voices to create a massive and unforgettable ensemble. The sight and sound of learners harmonizing to create a single, awe-inspiring choir left a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to witness the spectacle.

“This festival is a testament to the shared passion for music and the collaborative spirit that thrives within the Curro community,” commented Riaan Stroebel, Executive Head of Curro Durbanville. “The dedication and hard work of our learners have truly paid off in the remarkable performances we’ve witnessed tonight,” he said. This year’s festival holds profound significance as it marked a central part of Curro’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. Since striking a positive note with its inaugural event in 2014 during the unveiling of Curro Durbanville Primary School’s auditorium, the Choir Festival has evolved into an eagerly anticipated annual tradition. Each year’s showcase has been a testament to the unyielding dedication to musical excellence at the independent school group.

Jeanne Maritz, the esteemed Head of Curro Durbanville’s Music Department who has been involved since Curro’s inception comments, “The Curro Choir Festival stands as a tribute to our rich musical heritage and celebrates the diverse voices that continue to shape our lyrical narrative. The past 25 years have been a melodious journey of unwavering commitment and shared passion. This year, we were incredibly excited to hear the melodies of 600 voices. The success of the festival can be attributed to the determined efforts of the choir directors, and music teachers who worked diligently to ensure a seamless and memorable experience. Their commitment to nurturing and showcasing the musical talents of some of the Western Cape’s Curro schools was evident in every note. The event served as a reminder of the potential that lies within collaborative endeavors and the lasting impact that music can have in bringing communities closer together.
