The first Wembley Journey was an incredible outdoor experience that left an impression on the Form 4 and 5 scholars and teachers.  The Wembley Journey took place at Camp Solomon from the 17 to 24 March 2023 with a group of Form 4 and 5 scholars. The scholars embarked on a challenging adventure that tested their physical and mental limits. Throughout the journey, the scholars engaged in long hikes, team-building exercises, moments of solitude during which they received letters from home. These experience contributed towards personal growth and development in the scholars.

One of the highlights of the journey were the long hikes that the scholars undertook. These hikes were physically demanding and required the scholars to push themselves beyond their comfort zones. They traversed rugged terrains, crossed rivers and climbed steep mountains, often facing fatigue and soreness.  However, they persevered and learned the importance of resilience and determination in the face of challenges. Team-building exercises were also a significant part of the journey. The scholars had to work together in various tasks that required collaboration, communication and trust. These exercises fostered a sense of camaraderie and solidarity among the group and they learned that success is often achieved through collective effort.

Another unique aspect of the journey was the 24-hour solitude experience. Each scholar had to spend a day alone in the wilderness, with very little food and only their thoughts for company. This solitude allowed them to reflect on their thoughts, emotions, and aspirations, and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. It was a profound experience that helped them develop self-awareness, introspection, and appreciate the value of solitude in a fast-paced world. During this solitude time, they received letters from home, which for some was a heart-warming moment and for others a tear jerking realisation for the scholars. These letters served as a source of encouragement, motivation, and emotional support. They reminded the scholars of their loved ones’ unwavering belief in them and provided a much-needed boost during challenging times. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of human connections and the power of words to uplift and inspire.

The journey also brought into perspective the value of the everyday luxuries we often take for granted. Scholars realised that after experiencing the hardships of living on a “dollar a day” during the journey, they appreciated even more the basic necessities and comforts they have back home. It was a humbling experience that fostered gratitude and mindfulness towards the blessings in their lives. Throughout the journey, the words of the day played a crucial role in inspiring the scholars. These words were carefully chosen to motivate and uplift the group, and they served as guiding principles to navigate through tough times. Words like “perseverance,” “resilience,” “courage,” and “gratitude” were the anchors that kept the scholars focused and motivated, and helped them overcome challenges with determination and positivity.

Feedback sessions at the end of each day were also an integral part of the journey. Scholars gathered to reflect on their experiences, share their thoughts and emotions and provide feedback to each other. These sessions encouraged open and honest communication, promoted self-reflection and helped the scholars gain insights into their strengths and areas of improvement. It was a powerful learning opportunity that facilitated personal growth and fostered a supportive and inclusive community amongst the scholars. The first Wembley Journey was a transformative outdoor experience that challenged the scholars physically, mentally and emotionally. The journey helped the scholars realise the value of resilience, gratitude, teamwork and self-reflection. It also instilled in them a deeper appreciation for the blessings in their lives.
