Two brilliant young scientists from St Dominics Newcastle are set to showcase their groundbreaking research on an international platform! Hamzah Ismail and Vibhav Ramdas, both Grade 12 learners and Eskom Expo International Science Fair Gold medallists, have been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious International Festival of Engineering, Science and Technology (I-FEST²) in Tunisia from 21 to 27 March 2025. Their outstanding projects in Environmental Science and Computer Science earned them this opportunity after a rigorous selection by a panel of academics and industry professionals at the Eskom Expo. Hamzah Ismail – Revolutionising Construction with Eco-Friendly Fire-Retardant Plastic Bricks

Hamzah’s research explores a sustainable solution to plastic pollution by repurposing waste plastic into durable, fire-retardant bricks. His innovation could transform modern construction, making it more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and safer. With further development, this technology has the potential to be scaled up for global use, offering a practical approach to reducing plastic waste while revolutionising the building industry.

Vibhav Ramdas – AI-Powered Road Maintenance for Safer Cities

Vibhav’s project leverages object detection technology to improve road maintenance and traffic safety. His innovative system identifies road issues efficiently, potentially enhancing infrastructure upkeep and preventing accidents. The project’s multidisciplinary nature and real-world applications make it a strong contender for international recognition.
