Siyacula 2025: A Celebration of Song, Safety, and Community Spirit :By Siphiwe Mbonambi. Greytown – The rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal echoed with harmony and hope on Friday, 15 August, as Wembley College hosted the much-anticipated Siyacula 2025 Choral Festival. Rooted in the theme “Sakha Umphakathi” – “Building the Community” – this year’s event once again proved to be more than a competition. It was a stirring demonstration of unity, resilience, and the transformative power of music.
Four schools – Macongco Primary, Indlovana Primary, Tholinhlanhla Primary, and Cool Air School from Dalton – brought their voices, spirit, and creativity to the stage. Each choir displayed remarkable growth from last year, confidently tackling complex arrangements that tested their range and discipline. The children rose to the challenge with an infectious energy that swept through the audience, leaving teachers, parents, and dignitaries beaming with pride.
The choir competition was fierce yet joyous. In the end, a jubilant and well-deserving Cool Air School lifted the first-place trophy, their ecstatic smiles embodying the spirit of achievement. Cool Air doubled their victory by also claiming first position in the Impromptu Fire Song contest, a unique category supported by the Umvoti Fire Protection Association, which encourages children to champion fire safety through music. Macongco Primary School earned a strong second place in the choir contest, cementing their reputation as a rising force in the festival.

This year’s festival reached even greater heights with the presence of acclaimed recording artist Majozi, who joined the children and teachers in recording a new collaborative song. On stage, he performed alongside the mass choir, leading a series of rousing items that turned Wembley’s grounds into a sea of united voices. His humility and encouragement brought tears to many in the crowd, reminding all that the gift of music transcends age and circumstance.
Beyond music, the festival shone a light on fire awareness and community responsibility. The Umvoti Fire Protection Association, joined by partners Mondi and local fire personnel, showcased fire-fighting equipment and delivered vital safety lessons. The excitement on children’s faces as they explored the fire trucks was matched only by their newfound sense of responsibility – stepping proudly into their role as ambassadors for fire safety in their communities.

True to its theme, Siyacula once again brought together schools, families, artists, businesses, and organisations in a shared vision of upliftment. Every note sung and every hand clapped echoed the belief that community is strongest when built together.
The organisers extended heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors and partners whose unwavering support made Siyacula 2025 possible: Starke Ayres, Wembley College, Pick n Pay School Club, Plennegy, Odies Meats, BB Bakeries, The Beast Foundation, Pannar, Plennegy Print, and PSI Projects. Their investment not only fuelled a day of unforgettable memories but also helped sow seeds of inspiration in the next generation.
As the sun set on Wembley College, the spirit of Siyacula lingered – a chorus of voices reminding us that when children are given a stage, they don’t just sing; they build bridges, break barriers, and truly live the festival’s anthem: Sakha Umphakathi – Building the Community.
