Durbanville, Cape Town – Reddam House Durbanville has announced the appointment of former Bafana Bafana defender Neil Winstanley as the school’s new sport co-ordinator from the start of the 2026 academic year. Neil brings extensive professional experience and a deep passion for youth development. His playing career spanned more than a decade, representing clubs including Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs. Known throughout the Premier Soccer League for his commanding presence, strong leadership and excellent reading of the game, he now turns his focus to developing young athletes and strengthening Reddam’s sporting environment. He will take the lead in driving the school’s football programme, while also contributing to other summer sports and supporting the conditioning programme across all codes.

Neil says he was drawn to Reddam House Durbanville for its balance of ambition and genuine care for students. “What really stood out to me is that, while the school takes sport seriously, there is a strong focus on developing students as people, not just athletes. This role allows me to bring everything I’ve learned from my playing career into an environment where I can guide, mentor and inspire young players. It feels like the perfect next step – a chance to give back, stay connected to the game I love, and help shape the next generation.”

His coaching philosophy is built on discipline, mindset and purposeful training. “You don’t become a great player on match day,” he says. “You become one through the work you put in when no one’s watching.” He aims to create a football culture that is structured, engaging and rooted in understanding the ‘why’ behind decisions, helping players grow technically, tactically and mentally.

Neil’s immediate priorities include establishing strong foundations with a capable, aligned coaching team, and creating a competitive but enjoyable training environment where every player can develop their strengths and address areas of growth. Beyond football, he hopes to support all Reddam athletes through conditioning that enhances strength, movement and confidence across multiple sporting codes.

Executive head Barry Niewoudt says the appointment marks an exciting moment for the school’s sports programme. “Neil brings professionalism, deep knowledge and a strong commitment to developing young talent. His experience at the highest levels of South African football, combined with his passion for coaching, aligns perfectly with our vision for sport at Reddam House Durbanville. We are confident that his leadership will uplift our football programme and strengthen the broader sporting culture across the school.”

Among his many career highlights, Neil describes wearing the Bafana Bafana jersey for the first time as a moment he will never forget. He also credits former national coach Stuart Baxter as one of the mentors who shaped both his approach to the game and his decision to move into coaching. Reddam House Durbanville looks forward to welcoming Neil into the school community and entering a new era of energy, opportunity and growth within its sports department.
