Reddam House Bedfordview Grade 10 student Sienna Toich has achieved outstanding success at the AIDT National Dancer of the Year competition, winning multiple top awards including Junior National AIDT Winner, Junior Scholarship Award, Top Junior Improvisation Award, Anna Nel Bursary Award, and Regional AIDT Most Versatile Dancer. The prestigious event, adjudicated by three international examiners from the USA, Canada, and New Zealand, brought together South Africa’s most talented young dancers. Sienna earned her place at nationals after excelling at her regional qualifier and went on to take first place in the Junior Division. She also won the National Duet Section with her partner, Roan Stanbury, and achieved first place in a group performance – a testament to her artistry, versatility, and teamwork.

“Winning the overall title at a dance competition is an amazing experience,” says Sienna. “It feels rewarding to see all the hard work, practice, and commitment finally pay off. It builds your confidence and reminds you of what you’re capable of.”Sienna trains about 15 hours a week at the Lucia Cunningham Dance Academy, covering ballet, contemporary, jazz, acrobatics, and lyrical. “If I had to choose a favourite, it would be jazz,” she says. “The music and choreography are always creative and fun, making it an exhilarating style to perform.”Her teacher, Lucia Cunningham, describes her as a rare talent. “Sienna possesses a rare blend of technical precision, musical sensitivity, and fearless performance quality. What sets her apart is her natural ability to command the stage with quiet confidence – she dances with intention and emotional honesty far beyond her years. Watching her evolve from a determined young student into a polished, dynamic performer has been a privilege,” says Lucia.

Reddam House Bedfordview Executive Head Stephen Hazley says the school takes great pride in supporting students who excel beyond the classroom. “Our arts department is incredible – highly skilled and passionate about getting the best out of each of our artists. Academic staff also go out of their way to help students when they have to miss school or assessments due to national and international competitions,” he says.He adds: “Sienna is an exceptional dancer who shows incredible commitment to her art while maintaining the highest academic standards in her Grade 10 year. We celebrate all the talents our students have and encourage them to reach for their dreams in every area.”

Balancing school and competitive dance takes commitment and structure, but Sienna approaches it with discipline and positivity. “My calendar app is my best friend,” she laughs. “Every day is meticulously planned to balance classes, rehearsals, and study sessions. I couldn’t do it without my mom’s guidance and support.”For Sienna, dance is more than performance – it’s a journey of growth and expression. “These awards are more than just trophies. They represent the dedication, hard work, and growth behind every performance. Looking ahead, I want to keep refining my technique, explore new styles, and share my love of dance in a meaningful way.”
