Overview Sporting Achievements

This weekend Maritzburg College was up against Kearsney with cricket, water polo and basketball matches both at home and away on the go. College won five of the 10 external cricket matches, and 10 of the 19 basketball encounters. Kearsney however proved the stronger in the pool.

1st XI match report (Robbie Coutts – 1st team coach):

College captain Johnathan van Zyl won the toss on the Goldstones and had no hesitation in electing to bat on a wicket that looked like it would get lower and slower as the day progressed.

Kearsney started well and a mix of good bowling and poor shot selection never allowed College to settle as the home team were unable to put together any significant partnerships. The most important partnership of the day being 83; between Captain van Zyl (47) and Bryn
Brokensha (39). The pair, unfortunately for their team, went out just before the tea break after 25 overs leaving College at 115 for 5. Wickets fell at regular intervals after tea, and College were eventually bowled out for 152 in the 37th over.

Kearsney started well and by lunch, were well set at 39 for 1 after 10 overs. The game was changed by Cayden Hohls who picked up 3 wickets in a 5 over bowling spell, although Kearsney were still well in control of the match at 78 for 4. College, thanks to the efforts of off spinner James Wiggill, who was particularly tidy, bowling his 8 over spell for 15 runs, were able to put the Kearsney batsmen under pressure, and wickets fell at regular intervals, At 141 for 9, College had fought their way back into the game. The Kearsney last pair knuckled down and absorbed a lot of pressure from the College team and got their team home in the 41st over.

Maritzburg College came into the game thinking they knew what lay ahead with Kearsney. The start of the game was intense, and initially College had difficulty gaining momentum as Kearsney College came prepared for war with a good start and a plan that was in their favour.
