Primary school learners from the Witzenburg area recently enjoyed an educational programme celebrating Global Wind Day. Held at Morrisdale Primary School and Mooi Uitsig Primary School, this event aimed to increase awareness about the significance of wind energy and its vital role in combating climate change.

Astrid Booysen, a teacher from Mooi Uitsig Primary school, expressed her gratitude, saying, “We are grateful to the wind farm for involving our learners in such a special way. We are proud to share that our learners gained remarkable experiences through this programme. They thoroughly enjoyed the activities, especially working in mixed groups with various devices at their tables. The challenge of making and decorating their fans filled them with excitement and pride. This experience has left a lasting impact on their hearts.”

Funded as part of the Perdekraal East Wind Farm’s education programme, this initiative specifically targeted Grade 3 learners, encouraging them to explore the potential of wind energy through creative expression. As part of the festivities, the learners engaged in an exciting art project where they crafted and decorated pinwheels, symbolising the power and beauty of wind.

“Global Wind Day is a crucial reminder of the urgent need to transition to renewable energy sources amidst the escalating impacts of climate change. This day provides an excellent opportunity to educate young minds about the significance of wind energy and its potential to shape a sustainable future. By educating the community’s youngest members, we hope to foster greater awareness of pollution, climate change, and the benefits of renewable energy,” explained Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Perdekraal East Wind Farm. The annual event is celebrated across the world and is dedicated to learning more about wind energy, its power, and the possibilities it holds to change the world.
