AWSUM had a chat with Tré Gilbert, first team hockey captain of Selborne College. We asked him about their season and what his expectations are for the game against Grey High School.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year? I’ve been extremely happy with the work ethic from the squad.
We’ve really produced some good results. We are currently 6th in the country, and overall we’ve scored 141 goals and only conceded 36.

What do you expect from Grey on Saturday? Grey is always our biggest competition in the Eastern Cape, and they always provide a great fight. They have had a great season and are currently 3rd in the country, so the Eastern Cape final should provide an exciting game of hockey.

What does being captain of Selborne mean to you? Being given the honour of captaining the Selborne side has been an incredible experience. I’ve really enjoyed being able to share my love and knowledge of hockey with such a hardworking, diligent group of gents. We set goals for our season, and we’ve met most of them. The only one left is to win the Grey derby.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions? Within our school, Fridays are extremely festive and full of excitement with our weekly sing-song at first break. From there, the rest of the day mostly entails a lot of music during and before our warm-ups.

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators? The past few years have seen upsets for Selborne supporters in the Friday night games, and we know that we have the school behind us to change that narrative this year.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why? Andrew Cronje is someone I have tended to look towards in search of guidance in my hockey career. He was an Olympic captain of our SA hockey side and has lots of experience. He’s really been a great mentor and teammate to play club with for the past 3 years.
