Makanaka Chanyowedza, a Grade 5 pupil, decided to start a break time book club. When asked what her motivations were, Makanaka said “I got the idea of starting a book club when I heard my Mom was in a book club.” Makanaka was very young at the time and decided to wait a while. Two years later, she was allowed to take a book from the library named Dork Diaries Puppy Love.
She was so intrigued by the book that she read it in one day. This was when the idea came to her to start a break time book club, a place where pupils could read and discuss the books they were currently reading. Makanaka approached Mrs Frost, the school librarian, to ask for assistance with her book club. She knew that she would need a staff member to oversee the club. Mrs Frost was very excited and more than willing to help. The book club is growing daily, with the pupils discovering the love of reading as well as the magical world of books. Well done, Makanaka!
