Grade 10 learner Ben Esterhuyse delivered an exceptional performance at last weekend’s O’Neill Cold Water Junior Classic in Cape Town, dominating the competition and securing the lion’s share of the trophies and prize money.
The Rip Curl team rider and National Junior Team member claimed victory in the Under 18 division, earning a share of the R35 000 prize purse. In addition, he received R10 000 courtesy of Lifestyle Surf Shop in recognition of his outstanding performance throughout the event.
Capping off a remarkable weekend, Ben also won the O’Neill Top Wave Accumulator Award – presented to the surfer who posted the highest combined heat scores across the entire competition – underlining both his consistency and competitive edge in demanding cold-water conditions.
Head of Sport at Camps Bay High School, Ms Busi Ngcwama, commented: “At just 15, Ben is competing with maturity well beyond his years. What stands out is not only the results, but the way he approaches his surfing – with discipline, composure and quiet confidence. Performances like this reflect the work he puts in behind the scenes, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that dedication pay off at national level.”
