For 43 Grade 10 learners from St Dominics Newcastle, the memories created at Camp Solomon will be cherished for a lifetime. From 10 April to 17 March, the learners enjoyed their annual camp trip to the Otto’s Bluff area, situated 20km outside Pietermaritzburg. The camp is run by a company called Challenges is for Champions and has been the Grade 10 camp location since 2018.

“Camp Solomon gives our learners the chance to be challenged is a safe, technological-free environment, where they can learn so much about themselves and others,” explained organise and Grade 10 Head, Mr Gary de Jager. “They attain an enhanced sense of responsibility and the realisation that they are accountable for their own actions.”

Mr de Jager accompanied the learners on the camp and was joined by Mr Sihle Mthembu and Mrs Jeanne-Mari Neefs. When asked what makes the trip so unique and challenging, he said that for learners, it was being away from technology and the comforts of their own homes. “They had to do everything themselves, from making their own food to assembling their tents.” While the learners were safe, Mr de Jager admitted the weather made the already challenging trip even more of a challenge.

“On arrival, the learners are divided into two teams and dropped off 3km before the camp. They are then given their first task of walking the remaining distance using a map. On arrival, the camp rules are explained, and learners participate in a potjiekos competition.” The next day is spent hiking up to Camp Shawswood (18km), then one day on hiking up the mountain (12km) and the third day, hiking back to camp. One day is reserved for team-building activities and another day as a ‘working day’ on the farm. “The learners found it very tough in the beginning, but they eventually realised they are stronger than they thought they were.” Mr de Jager concluded by saying that Camp Solomon is something our learners need. “I would recommend it to any learner because it gets you out of your comfort zone and teaches you how to grow.”
