Serving Our School, Serving Our Community”: Chelsea Preparatory School’s Decade-Long Commitment to Service and Leadership. Over a decade ago, Chelsea Preparatory School embarked on a transformative journey by replacing the traditional prefect system with a pioneering “Service Team” programme founded on the core values of service and community engagement. This innovative approach has empowered every Grade 7 pupil with the opportunity to actively participate in service teams, each with its own unique function and identity.
At Chelsea Prep, these service teams cover a broad spectrum, ranging from Environment and Technology to Recycling, Events, Sports, Art, School Pride, and EarlyAct. This diverse array of teams ensures that every pupil can find their niche based on their interests and aptitudes, enabling them to create a positive impact on the lives of others within the school and the broader community.
Each service team nominates two leaders who conduct regular meetings, complete with agendas and minutes, fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability. To further nurture their leadership skills, these leaders participate in a dedicated leadership camp. In 2023, the camp focused on essential topics such as “What Makes a Leader,” “Communication,” “Life Pillars,” “Conflict Resolution,” and “Problem Solving.” During this transformative weekend, the leaders convene to nominate and vote for the Executive Council, a body that represents Chelsea Prep pupils and Grade 7 Service Teams at bi-termly meetings. This council plays a pivotal role in addressing concerns and proposing service projects for the upcoming year. The 2023 Executive Council members are as follows:
- Chairperson: Mika Gouws
- Vice Chairperson: Teale Beart
- Secretary: Kayleigh Pitt

At Chelsea Prep, the Service Team programme imbues each child with a profound sense of purpose. As they leave the school upon completing Grade 7, they depart not only having engaged in standard sports, cultural, and academic programmes but also with the gratifying knowledge that they have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to Chelsea Prep.
Principal Grant Maartens comments, “Our Service Team programme instills a fundamental shift in our students’ mind-set. Instead of asking, ‘What can my school do for me?’ they ask, ‘What can I give back to my school and community to make a difference?’ This shift in perspective fosters a culture of service and leadership that extends far beyond the classroom.”
