After a hiatus of two years, brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wynberg Boys’ Junior School (WBJS) were pleased to be able to undertake a trip to Gqeberha to continue their Sporting and Cultural Derby against its brother school and rival Grey Junior. The derby took place from Thursday, 5 May, until Sunday, 8 May 2022. A group of +-300 learners took part in the tour that covered rugby, hockey and cross country U10 – U13 teams, Squash 1st & 2nd team, and the concert band of 25 musicians. A total of 27 staff members accompanied the tour group along with many Wynberg families.
Maintaining the fixture against Grey Junior allows Wynberg Boys’ Junior School to provide an opportunity to learners who represent teams across the groups to tour. Representing their school with pride in showcasing the true spirit of Supera Moras, overcoming difficulties. Headmaster, Mr Cedric Poleman says that “the unique nature of boys' schools is once again celebrated through this traditional exchange. What makes this trip unique is that not only our “A-teams” travel and have this experience. This year, we could field at least four teams at every age level. For many boys, this will be the only occasion they can travel with their Junior School.

We hope that the ultimate purpose of developing lifelong friendships not only amongst themselves but with the Grey boys is realised. Competing against your rival during the day and then going home to be hosted with them for the night develops a very different camaraderie and friendship”. Connor Kruger, U12, says “the part I enjoyed the most was being able to play rugby as well as supporting my peers while they played their sports. The moment I will take away with me which will last forever is beating Grey for the first time”. “I enjoyed meeting my host family and attending the sports events. The highlight of the tour for me was winning my U10 cross country race” says Brett Liddell. Justin Igilige, U13, said, “the squash was challenging as Grey is a good school, but it was a good experience to play against them”.

Playing hockey and piano in the concert band alongside my Grey Junior peers made me feel like I was part of an extended family. The derby was friendly but fierce and the atmosphere created by the travelling Wynberg supporters for the teams of Wynberg Boys’ Junior School were electrifying and the supporters were vociferous in their vocal support.
