St Andrew’s College won the toss versus Selborne College and did well to bat out their allotted 65 overs on Lower’s pitch which had a tinge of green to it. Openers, William Beamish (85) and debutant Rhys Wiblin (81) combined well at the crease, creating a solid foundation for College’s innings of 268/5. This left Selborne 55 overs for their run chase, and with free flowing Border batsmen, Jacque van der Merwe and Tre’ Gilbert in the lineup, College would have to hit their lines and lengths. College found two early wickets, and thereafter the van der Merwe and Gilbert duo applied the pressure and showed their class, making the most of College’s erred lengths, and blasted Lower field’s square boundaries. Selborne were firmly on the front foot on 165/3 after 31 overs, and like Friday night’s T20 match College had to find a way to respond. William Beamish was thrown the ball by his Captain Mitchell Coventry, Mitchell recently promoted to Captain after incumbent Captain Murray Wilson broke his hand in the College Premier League, whilst successfully diving for a catch in the outfield. Wiliam Beamish gave it is all in the match up versus van der Merwe, who unfortunaly, when on 99 was trapped in front by Beamish, reigniting the College team. Thereafter a mix up led to Tre’ Gilbert’s run out for 67 and College had managed to put the breaks on, with Selborne needing 75 runs in the last hour of 16 overs. College tossed Rhys Wiblin the ball encouraging the Selborne batsmen to take on his leggies, but Selborne went somewhat quiet finishing the drawn match on 249/5, with Waedan Plaaitjies on 64 not out. A very well done to both teams for producing an intriguing declaration match and for following up the animated Friday’s nights T20 match with superb entertainment in a testing day of declaration
cricket.
