The 2026 Walter Swanson Music Competition was an outstanding showcase of musical excellence, with one of the highest performance standards seen at SACS in recent years.

Interest was exceptionally strong, with 25 learners applying, leading to a raised entry requirement (from Grade 5 to Grade 7 standard) and a two-round format. The first round, held on 17 March and adjudicated by Ms Josie McClure, saw 22 performers, with 12 progressing to the final.

The evening final, adjudicated by Mrs Pamela Keirman of Stellenbosch University, featured performances of remarkable technical skill and musical maturity. A full auditorium of parents, Old Boys, and fellow learners created a warm, supportive atmosphere, enhanced by Mrs Keirman’s insightful and encouraging feedback.

Massive congratulations to our winner:

  • Justin Wood (Grade 12, Saxophone)
  • Performance: Pequeña Czardas by Iturralde – a highly virtuosic work of university-level standard.

Our sincere thanks to the dedicated music staff for preparing our learners, and their commitment and professionalism in delivering such a memorable event.
