Announcement of new Deputy Rectors of Paul Roos Gymnasium

André van Staden, Rector of Paul Roos Gymnasium and Roelou Slabbert, Chair of the Governing Body announced the appointment of Paul Roos Gymnasium’s Deputy Rectors.

Gwen Olivier
Gwen Olivier has been appointed by the Western Cape Department of Education as Deputy Rector Academics from 1 October 2021. Gwen Olivier will succeed Werner van Rensburg, who passed away in 2020 due to Covid.
Mrs. Olivier joined the school in January 2006 as HOD and has served as Deputy Rector of Paul Roos Gymnasium since 2012. “It is a privilege and proof of the quality of our educators and the leadership within our own ranks to have this position filled by one of our own members of staff.” André van Staden

The Governing Body has appointed Alfred Blume as Internal Deputy Rector.
The appointments followed after an extensive process. There was a very strong list of candidates who applied for the posts, from which Mrs Olivier and Mr Blume were selected.

Alfred Blume
Mr Blume grew up in Cradock. He has a Bachelor in Education from NMMU and completed an Honour’s Degree in Educational Management. He has been teaching Afrikaans at Hilton College, KwaZulu-Natal since 2010. He was a member of the school’s Executive and Managing Committee and Chairman of the Housemasters’ Committee. Mr Blume has a formal rugby coaching background and received an award as Sharks’ Schools u/18 Craven Week rugby team forwards coach (2017 – 2019).
Mr Blume said: “It is an honour and a privilege to join an outstanding institution such as Paul Roos Gymnasium. I am grateful to the Governing Body for their faith in me.”
Paul Roos Gymnasium welcomes AC and Kirsty to Stellenbosch and looks forward to the contribution that the Deputy Rector, who has vast experience in the ethos and environment of an all-boys educational institution, will bring to our school, which is steeped in tradition and history.
Mrs Olivier and Mr Blume will play leading roles in ensuring that Paul Roos Gymnasium maintains its high level of academic and co-curricular achievements; the Governing Body has every confidence that this will continue under the leadership of Mr van Staden.
