20/20 for Lowveld Academy Matric Class of 2020!
Hoedpsruit – When matriculants of 2020 started their final year of academics, who would’ve thought that they would be facing a global pandemic, and Lowveld Academy achieve a 100% pass rate!
The change in our day-to-day routines threw up many new challenges in teaching and learning for both educators and students in all phases of life. Throughout the first part of a national state of disaster teachers across South Africa had to find, and rely on, new ways of teaching and interacting with students on a meaningful level. Many relied on online structures, while others sought to create save environments for students to attend class, such as at Lowveld Academy.
With the release of national pass rates, on Tuesday 23 February, we can finally see the outcome of the efforts put in by educators and governing bodies. Lowveld Academy has since its inception always sought to Strive for Excellence and has, through the valiant efforts of its matric class of 2020, achieved a 100% pass rate in the last NSC Examinations!
During 2020 LA created a safe environment for its students to return to a semi-normalised state of attending school, by making use of stringent hygiene practices and staggered attendance of students. The protocols tested and developed in the first half of 2020 by Lowveld Academy are still being used successfully today. These protocols allowed for an environment at school that was safer than any normal public space, and resulted in Lowveld Academy not having a single COVID-19 positive case at school. Overall attendance of students rising to an all-time high.
The additional stress experienced by both student and educator resulted in schools utilizing all available resources to keep a constant academic programme available to all students. Lowveld Academy relied heavily on online teaching and WhatsApp support groups, and made use of personalised intervention programmes and extra classes to mitigate the loss of academic time as result of national lockdown. All of these intervention strategies, along with the exceptional dedication of the grade 12’s of 2020, has resulted in Lowveld Academy achieving it’s first 100% pass rate!
Along with the 100% pass rate, Lowveld Academy also achieved a 100% pass rate in 13 of its 17 FET subjects as follows:
- Accounting: 58.74%
- Afrikaans First Additional Language: 64.46%
- Agricultural Science : 48.41%
- Business Studies: 53.93%
- Computer Applications Technology: 56.20%
- English Home Language: 55.17%
- History: 53.13%
- Geography: 48.57%
- Life Orientation: 66.54%
- Mathematical Literacy: 57.46%
- Physical Science: 60.16%
- Tourism: 69.14%
- Visual Arts: 68.50%
From the 20 distinctions achieved by LA students, a special mention must go to Anika du Plessis, a dedicated individual and life-long LA student, who managed 4 distinctions and an average percentage of 78.71%. Also deserving of special mention is Mosima Mabasa with an average of 75.14%; and Kagiso Kgamadi with an average of 71.0%.
At Lowveld Academy 46 Matrics wrote their Final NSC Exams during November 2020, each writing 7 subjects. Out of a total of 322 papers written by LA students, only 6 papers in total did not pass. That is a remarkable achievement by any standard, especially under the unusual academic environment of 2020. The past academic year caused much concern among everyone, but the results achieved by the class of 2020 proves that hard work and determination is the key to success!
