Centre from Westville Boys’ High School to join Sharks in 2021
AWSUM caught up with Mnqobi Mambo Mkize, inside centre from Westville Boys’ High School to talk about his contract at the Sharks.
Firstly, congratulations with your signing at the Sharks. How does it feel to be seen and acknowledged for your talents? It’s honestly a blessing. I know for sure that all would not be possible without God. It feels awesome to know that God loves me so much, so all the glory to Him.
This is a difficult year for the Matrics of 2020, and even more so for the sportsmen and girls. Can you describe to us your personal experience and feelings in this regard? Well, yes, most definitely it is very unfortunate and it is discouraging, but I am pretty relaxed about it because God said “no weapon formed against us shall prosper” so I rejoice through this storm, knowing that better things are to come. I am personally using this time for growth in every way, most importantly spiritually and I am also doing a lot of hard work and preparation so that when the opportunity comes, I will be ready and have no regrets.
What influence did Westville Boys’ High School have on your rugby career? I am a person who works well around good people. Within the Westville community, I am free and comfortable to express myself to the highest level. Mr Mclaren, Mr Zulu, Mr Hitchings, Mr Jooste and Mr van Rensburg, my rugby coaches, have all had a major influence on my life. I have learnt so much from them all and I honestly pray that God will continue to bless them. I am the player I am today because of them.
Who had the most influence on your rugby career thus far and why? There are quite a few, especially where I come from. My mom was always there to support me. I love and appreciate her so much, but if I had to choose one, it would be my coach, Mr Zulu, who is also my boarder master at Westville Boys’ High School. I interact with him throughout the day. He gives me his time; he invests in me and believes in me. I have received a lot of wisdom and rugby knowledge from him. He is truly an angel sent from heaven.
Who is your role model as a rugby player and why? This is a tough one, because I see them as my inspiration – and there are quite a lot of them! If I had to choose one rugby player, it would be Sonny Bill Williams because I model my game on him. But, my ultimate role model is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is just awesome! His attitude towards hard work and being the greatest is just out of this world! I really feed off him.
What are you looking forward to the most now that you are contracted player? I would like to influence and inspire people in the right way; leading by example and guiding people to give their lives to Jesus Christ.
What is your opinion about Sharks and why did you decide to sign with them? The Sharks run a brilliant setup. One important thing about the Sharks is that they focus on their people and not just rugby. They interact with their supporters who tend to become family and I think that’s what it is all about: the Love. Personally, I have always felt like I belong in the Sharks family and every time I set foot in there, I feel like I am at home.
We wish you well for this journey ahead and hope that that your dreams will come to reality.
