Over the past 2 weekends, the 20th annual #CANSAShavathon fundraising event has taken place at various shopping centers across South Africa, with many people shaving, donating, and spraying their hair in recognition and support of Cancer sufferers. St Benedict School in Pinetown is extremely proud of Lia Govender in Grade 7 who donated 43cm of her hair at Pavilion.
It was not an easy decision for Lia to make as she has had long hair since Grade R but she feels that a woman’s hair is closely linked to her dignity and pride and that, by donating her hair, she could help someone in their fight against cancer.
Lia’s mom, Katy, said that St Benedict School has played a big part in the values which are instilled in her children. I would like other parents, schools, and children to promote the same. We have the ability to help many people fighting this dreadful illness.”
