Danville Park Girls’ High wins project up-scale funding, builds veggie tunnel
One Planet Water Explorer UN Global Search for Sustainable Schools – Danville Park Girls’ High School was one of seven schools awarded project up-scale funding last year as part of the One Planet Water Explorer UN Global Search for Sustainable Schools in 2019.
The funding was put towards building a vegetable tunnel that will be monkey proof and a water tank to supply water for the vegetables. The tunnel has just been completed and the first vegetable seedlings have already been planted. Joe West, an expert in regenerative farming, constructed the tunnel and gave Environmental Society members valuable advice on what to plant, when to harvest and soil preparation (he strongly believes in no dig gardening so as not to upset the soil microbe balance). So far various types of lettuce, onions, brinjals and spinach have been planted. Danville patiently awaits their first crop of vegetables with much excitement.
Danville is extremely thankful to Bridget and Julia from the One Planet Water Explorer Programme for this wonderful opportunity.
