St Peter’s College Junior Winter Sports Festival
On Saturday, 11 May 2019 St Peter’s College held a junior winter sports festival which saw ten schools participating in hockey, netball and rugby. The festival began 15 years ago with the aim of supporting the development of the winter sports and to provide much-needed competition for the junior school teams.
The festival also presented an opportunity for the first team Derby between St Peter’s College and Rooseveldt High School Rugby first teams. “I am extremely satisfied with the attitude and desire that was shown by all our teams during the Junior Festival. The input of players, coaches, staff and parents cumulated in a wonderful day of sport. I am looking forward to the Derby day’s and league fixtures ahead,” said Mr Dave Short – St Peter’s College Head of Sport
Junior hockey girls and boys flooded the St Peter’s College astroturf as well as their Mandela and Luthuli fields. There was fierce competition amongst the teams as shown in the marginal differences in the results where the leading teams only won by four points or less on average.
Eight netball teams battled out, showing great talent and skills amongst the junior players. St Peter’s College teams won five out of eight games throughout the age categories. “I am very happy with the teams results although we took defeat in some other games. The juniors are making good progress on their technical skills and one cannot help but to be excited about the future of netball,” said Ms Christelle van Schalkwyk – St Peter’s College Netball Manager.
