St Mary’s DSG Pretoria announced their new Head of School
NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT
On behalf of the Selection Committee of the Board of Governors, it is my great pleasure to announce that Mrs Odelle Howard has accepted our invitation to become the next Head of School at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), effective January 2021.
The Board of Governor’s decision to appoint Mrs Howard was based on the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Committee, which included the Vice Chairman and members of the Board of Governors. Guided by one of South Africa’s leading search consultancies in education, the Selection Committee interviewed seven senior educators with the relevant expertise in private and state school environments, as well as a holistic knowledge of educational best practices. After a rigorous interview process, three of
the most highly qualified candidates were interviewed for a second time.
It was agreed that Mrs Howard was the most suitable, combining educational leadership experience with a powerful commitment to
inclusivity and to preparing young women to be leaders and critical thinkers in a rapidly changing world. Moreover, in Mrs Howard, the Board of Governors is delighted to have identified a leader who is approachable, warm, visible in the role, and a passionate advocate for students.
Mrs Howard currently serves as Head of College at Reddam House Waterfall. She began her educational career at Coastal KwaZulu Natal College, teaching a Science bridging course to post-matric students unable to qualify for studies in Engineering. Mrs Howard took up a concurrent position, teaching Physical Sciences over weekends to children from historically disadvantaged educational backgrounds. Her love for all things science-related translated to a move to Eskom, in order to train teachers on how to teach Physical Science while demystifying misconceptions around the subject.
Mrs Howard subsequently accepted a HOD: Physical Sciences position at St Benedict’s College in Pinetown. She then moved to St Stithians College to manage the Department of Physical Science of the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy. Mrs Howard’s passion for student wellness led her to serve as Deputy Head of Student Affairs at St Peter’s College. After seven years at St Peter’s College, Mrs Howard accepted the position of Head of College at Reddam House Waterfall.
Mrs Howard earned a Higher Diploma in Education from the University of KwaZulu Natal, and an Honours Degree in Education Leadership and Management from the University of Johannesburg. She has also completed the Leadership Development Programme at WITS Business School and has received formal training in counselling.
The decision to appoint Mrs Howard was finalised prior to the serious allegations of racism, racial discrimination and other forms of discrimination that were brought to the attention of the Board of Governors over the course of the last month. Subsequent events have only served to reinforce our view that Mrs Howard’s passion for educating the whole person, her commitment to transformation and
diversity, and exceptional results in previous positions make her the ideal person to lead St Mary’s DSG into their next chapter. Mrs Howard’s dedication to learners and expertise with both school leadership and student learning are all qualities that the Board of Governors believed were essential in our next Head of School.
Mrs Howard is deeply committed to making the much-needed changes that will meet the needs of Mrs Howard is married to Fabian, who is Deputy Head of Academics at St David’s Marist Inanda. They have two sons; Jayden is seventeen years old and Jaxon is four years old. On behalf of the Board of Governors, please join me in welcoming Mrs Howard to the St Mary’s DSG family. St Mary’s look forward to walking this journey with her.
