De La Salle Holy Cross College would like to commend their young people for putting together a poignant and insightful assembly commemorating Youth Day. This year’s Youth Month theme is: “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society. The History Department and the Pupils’ Transformation, Diversity and Inclusion representatives led the assembly.
Alumnus Candice Chirwa reminded the youth of their power as a collective to transform the world and bring hope to their communities. “We should never underestimate the power of young people. The future of our beloved country lies in the hands of the youth. The more we empower our youth today, the brighter tomorrow our nation will witness.” Candice Chirwa. #dlshccmatric2013
Ms Faeeza Lok, the guest speaker at our assembly reminded our pupils that they “owe a debt of gratitude” to the brave young people who took part in the Soweto Uprising. We are intrinsically linked to one another, and the youth should be a driving force to change our society. Change is always possible when people are brave and involved.
“When we think about June 16, instead of thinking of it as an excuse for a public holiday, we should remember the selfless and courageous acts of those students on that day 46 years ago. Their courage and defiance changed history forever. Their actions act as a reminder of the power of our voices as the youth. And we should try every day to use our voices to make the world better and create a brighter future for ourselves and those to come,” said Bokang Leballo and Devin Marais (Gr 12), Councillors and TDI representatives.
