PLG Mellow Oaks takes Private School League and D12 Junior Hockey League
For only the second year now has PLG Mellow Oaks Academy been part of the D12 Primary Schools Hockey league held throughout the Roodepoort District. During the first year of participation (2018), their Junior boys team placed third in the Private School division.
2019 however saw the team going from strength to strength, and by building on the foundations laid down last year, they placed first in the Private School League and made it through to the play-offs of the District held in the week of 10-12 September 2019 at Bastion High School.
During the 2019 season, PLG Mellow Oaks kept a winning score sheet, beating elite Private Schools such as Curro Wilgeheuwel Academy (4-0), Trinityhouse Little Falls (6-0), Maragon Ruimsig (1-0), Curro Krugersdorp (3-2) and Charterhouse (2-0).
Being a smaller school than all of their opponents, the team stood back for nobody and played their hearts out in every match. Playing every match with enthusiasm and the ability to “never say die”, the boys portrayed values which shows how much hockey and the thirst for victory means to them.
When the play-offs arrived, the boys of Mellow Oaks Academy arrived at the venue with hearts full of belief that this year they will go all the way. Tuesday 10 September was the scheduled date for the quarterfinal vs Laerskool Helderkruin. After a tense match, and a drawn score of 2-2 at full time, it was time for the 8-second penalty shootout. Well done to the boys for holding their nerve, winning the match with a 3-1 penalty aggregate!
On Wednesday it was time for the semi-final of the District league. Mellow Oaks was up against a formidable foe in the form of Curro Krugersdorp. After a tense league match, we knew that one goal would determine the outcome of the match. And so it proved. Mellow Oaks winning a brilliant hockey match 1-0.
Then it was time for the big one. District final. Mellow Oaks vs Kings School Westrand. Both teams not losing a single match throughout their respective league seasons. The boys were mentally up for this game, focusing on their respective roles in the team, and visualizing their game, step by step. At half-time, the score was 1-0 to Mellow Oaks Academy. Deep breaths and hard words were spoken at half-time, not to let the opportunity slip away. Some nervous moments and a lack of concentration saw Kings draw the scores at 1-1 with 3 minutes left to play.
All-out attack. Give everything you have for the last 3 minutes.
- Score. 2-1. Time is up. Breathe.
- District Champions.
