On the AWSUM Couch with Maragon Ruimsig head girl
Meet Maragon Ruimsig head girl Inge Odendaal
Congratulations on being chosen as a leader at your school. What is your leadership philosophy?
A leader can only be effective if they have a team to lead. I believe that the most important thing a leader can do is to create an environment where everyone on the team wants to contribute and perform thereby strengthening the team as a whole. Our headmaster, Mr. R. De Klerk, always emphasises the importance of servant-leadership, so in line with that from one of my favourite TV series I have adopted the philosophy “How can I help?”
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths: I believe that one of my greatest strengths is my ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently by breaking it down into manageable steps. I have also tried to take advantage of all the opportunities that my school has offered to further develop this ability. By participating in each pillar of my school (academics, leadership, sport, culture and service) I have learnt to communicate efficiently and respectfully with a wide variety of personalities and cultures. I believe that my upbringing has instilled within me a strong set of moral values and I will filter these values through my actions to set an example for the rest of the school in respect, compassion, justice and kindness.
Weaknesses: Sometimes I get hung up on small details which put me under a lot of unnecessary stress. I struggle to admit when I am wrong as I am sometimes too competitive for my own good. The fact that this was quite difficult to admit kind of proves my point.
What are you looking forward to the most during your tenure as leader?
The power. I look forward to putting people in their place and enforcing the natural order of the universe. No, I’m just kidding. I am really excited to start new traditions and create a unique identity for our school through this transition phase, while honouring the morals and traditions that are at the heart of Maragon students.
Is there anything you would like to change at your school?
I would love to start an annual tradition of planting trees around our campus and sports fields that future prefects can continue, creating a legacy. In addition to being beneficial to the environment in a time where “going green” is imperative it will create a great atmosphere by complementing our beautiful facilities. As a prefect body I would love our focus to be on benefiting the environment while at the same time empowering our local community and creating an even greater sense of unity within the school.
What do you love the most about your school?
I love that our school encourages individualism and does not force you to fit into a prescribed box. While being a mismatch of people from different backgrounds, cultures and with different personalities we are encouraged not to conform to a norm but rather to embrace the diversity. In this way everyone is allowed to grow, but also to become true Global Citizens, able to understand situations from different perspectives and act respectfully.
Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for?
I am aiming for 10 A+s and an average of 95%.
What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders?
As a quote from Amelia Earhart reads, “The most effective way to do it, is to do it.” We have an opportunity to change the things that we are always complaining about, so let’s just do it.
Who is your role model?
To pick one would be like having a single bite of ice cream at an All-You-Can-Eat buffet. I am inspired by the beauty of the ending of The Great Gatsby, the bravery of Malala Yousafzai, the innovation of Elon Musk and the madness of my friends.
What are your plans for after matric (2021)?
Can I get back to you on this one?
If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why?
Kitty Pryde, besides being able to walk through walls Kitty is one of the best hackers, capable of programming, modifying and diagnosing almost any computer system. I’m pretty sure that if I could do that I could have answered what my plans are after matric.
On a regular Saturday, you will find me at AP Maths suffering with Gabriella, Mark, Josh and Riccardo and finding solace in the fact that we are all equally confused. Afterwards I do love going out with a few of my friends or even just watching movies or having dinner with them at home.
