Edenglen High School matrics adapt to the new normal
For the first time in many years, abandoning my blankets on a winter’s morning was as easy as “A-B-C.” I was thrilled to go to back to school! Walking in, all I could think about was “Good bye zoom lessons, good bye confusion, good bye WhatsApp conversations with friends or teachers to find out about work that needed to be done and hello Edenglen High School.”
On Monday 8 June 2020, the teachers, who were on duty and ensuring we were going through the health and safety process, happily greeted learners. After being screened, learners who were at school played the waiting game and I think it would be safe to say that all of us could not wait to, finally, see our friends in person.
When my friends came, we starred at each other and broke out in laughter. I guess, it was our coping mechanism because we could not hug each other and, as the saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.”
The day went according to the program that was set by our teachers. The three Head prefects and I were looking forward to speaking to the rest of the class of 2020 and encouraging one another to keep our eyes set on our goal. We were excited to spread positivity. We believe that we still have so much that we can do, despite the circumstances. Communicating that was important.
The day of finding our feet again, ended. Being at school felt good. We listened to our teachers and co-operated. The one thing I will forever be impressed with would have to be the atmosphere we created, as a grade, for the day. It was filled with hope, happiness, and laughter and, judging by everyone’s eyes, smiles, well under their masks. To the Class of 2020, let us not give up and let us make history!
