First Team Hockey Girls Captain: Sibongile Hlwempu What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year? 

The biggest highlight of the season thus far is being unbeaten in the league, but we are also looking forward to the Derby. We have been training hard and playing even harder. Commitment and dedication have been an integral part in preparation for the 2023 Derby.

How do you motivate your team? Motivation a hockey team is all about instilling a sense of purpose, creating a positive team culture and setting achievable goals. I motivate the team by having team talks, watching motivational videos and having fun at practices. The words I encourage the team with are: to always keep their heads up and never give up. Keeping our heads up means we have to stay positive and confident throughout the game, to keep going and never lose hope.

Who is your vice-captain and how does she support you? Our vice-captain is Moleleka Lesole. Molly is a very supportive teammate. She consistently shows a positive and energetic attitude, even during a tough match. She supports me, encourages the team and comes up with ideas on how to recap and remember different skills and techniques.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?  What the team wants to achieve this year is to man-up to our own mistakes, be sisters and have an unbreakable bond. We also want to win the league and to do that we have to win the Derby. We have to work hard in order to maintain the status of being unbeaten.

What are your plans for the future? My biggest plan and wish for the future is to play for the South African hockey team. I also want to seek out new partnerships and sponsorships to generate additional revenue for the school.

Wat kan die skool en ouers hierdie jaar by die Derby te wagte wees van julle span? Ons bring altyd alles wat ons het. Goeie sportmanskap en hokkie is ons doelwit.

Waar sou jy sê lê julle krag hierdie jaar? Ons krag lê altyd in die Here en Sy genade. Die meisies se veggees en die jaar se slagspreuk spreek boekdele: “Alone we can do little, but together we can do so much!”
