The 1st XV arrived at St John’s College last Wednesday for their 26th Easter Rugby Festival, which is part of the school’s 125th celebrations. The official opening, or Capping Ceremony, took place in the school chapel. The audience included boys from all 14 teams, parents and sponsors. The guest speaker for the function was matric learner at Graeme College and member of the 1st XV coaching set-up, Simnikiwe Bosman. He was welcomed to the podium by the headmaster of St John’s College and Old Graemian, Mr Stuart West.
Simnikiwe eloquently and movingly spoke of his journey from being a 1st XV star to an amputee and the massive impact that it had on his life. He spoke of the many ‘team members’ who had supported him throughout his road to recovery. The staff and boys of Graeme College were incredibly proud of the way that Simnikiwe spoke from the heart and connected with his audience in a deep and meaningful way. He received a standing ovation from all present and was then invited to present all the players present with their festival caps. Simnikiwe has accompanied the team as part of the coaching staff (so still part of the team). “Play every game as if it’s your last because you never know when that might be,” he told the young men to a standing ovation.
