A spirited performance by the Westering 1st XI Cricket team set up an exciting encounter as they took on Pearson High School in their long-standing Co-Ed cricket encounter on Saturday. After winning the toss, the hosts Pearson elected to bowl first in the 50 over match. Pearson took early control of the match and had Westering in trouble at 63/7. Daylon Boyce and Dillan Lippere showed lots of guts and determination as the visitors clawed their way back into the match. Boyce with 25 and Lippere with 26 helped their team to post a competitive 147 as Pearson took the final wicket with the score on 147. Pearson captain Umar Gangat was the pick of the bowlers and returned figures of 3/12 in 9 overs. He was well supported by his brother Esa who picked up 2/18 in 10 overs.
After lunch, the Westering bowlers came out firing as Pearson had their backs against the wall at 63/5. The two Gangat brother came to their rescue as Umar scored a responsible 33 while Esa guided the Pearson team to victory with a quick fired 47 not out of 42 balls under great pressure. Pearson ended up winning the match by 3 wickets.
Whilst the boys’ were on the cricket pitch, the Pearson girls 1st tennis team gained a valuable victory at home against Collegiate’s 1st team. Wins at the number 1, 3 and 4 position gave Pearson a 3-1 overall victory with the only loss coming at the number 2 position. The result sets things up nicely for the last round of upcoming league matches with a number of schools still in contention to win the coveted 1st league trophy.
Whilst our Pearson sports teams were performing well on land, our aquatics athletes were achieving success in the water with the U15s and 1st team girls’ water polo teams travelling to Johannesburg to take part in the Shaun Fuchs and Old Petrian’s Water Polo Tournaments respectively. The first team girls played 10 matches won 6, drew 1 and only lost 3, to end 12th out of 28 teams. The u15 girls ended 8th out of 20 teams.
