Wing from Grey High School to join the Sharks in 2021
AWSUM caught up with Siviwe Zondani, wing from Grey High School to talk about his contract at the Sharks.
Firstly, congratulations with your signings at the Sharks. How does it feel to be seen and acknowledge for your talents? It feels unreal. I am mostly grateful and humbled by the acknowledgment of my God given talents and the opportunity to represent my family, my school and the Sharks organisation. I’m fortunate to have had great guidance and support from the people around me.
This is a difficult year for the Matrics of 2020, and even so more sportsmen and girls. Can you describe your personal experience and feelings in this regards? It’s been challenging, like it has been for everyone. Goals that I set suddenly became unreachable. I have accepted that I should focus on what I can control, that being how I feel, how hard I work and how much I study. The big positive of it all is having the opportunity to spend time with my family.
What influence did your school have on your rugby career? Grey High School has had a massive influence on me as a rugby player, but more importantly on me as a person. I’ve grown immensely, the world class coaches and teachers at Grey has instilled strong values and character in all of the boys there. It was a blessing to be able to play against top opposition on a weekly basis and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to play for Grey.
Who had the most influence on your rugby career thus far and why? Mr Béan Van Eeden, my rugby coach who started coaching me at U16 level. He understands the game of rugby and shared that knowledge with me. He’s been a great influence as a coach but also impacted my life as a mentor by instilling core values.
Who is your role model as a rugby player and why? World Cup winning winger Makazole Mapimpi for his elusiveness, pace and clinical finishing abilities.
What are you looking forward to the most now that you are a contracted player? The opportunity to take my game to the next level. I’m excited to grow as a player, to develop myself in all areas of the game and to soak in as much as I can from the top players and coaches I’ll be joining.
What is your opinion about the Sharks and why did you decide to sign with them? Personally I feel like the Sharks has a system any player can succeed in. They take great care of their players and have created an awesome environment in which I can grow daily. I’m humbled by the opportunity they’ve given me and I am looking forward to start repaying their faith in me.
We wish you well for this journey ahead and hope that your dreams will come to reality.
