Meet Union High School’s Head Boy: Matthew Basson

Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? I am looking forward to growing as a leader, while also building a sense of unity in our school. I want to take our school one step closer to the best it can be!

What are your strengths and weaknesses? My strengths are that I can lead in an adaptable manner and that I can keep a level head under pressure, as I can stand for what I believe in. I am teachable and aim to lead with a servant heart. My weaknesses are that I may be too timid at times and sometimes I struggle to see the bigger picture within a situation.

Is there anything you would like to change at your school? Anything which pulls the name of Union High School down. Whether it be discipline or otherwise orientated.

What do you love the most about your school? I love the sense of family within our school. It truly feels like a second home where I am supported by friends and teachers alike. My dream is that all learners may come to feel this way about our school.

Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for?  My goal is to be in the Top 3 academically. I’m aiming for at least 5 or 6 distinctions with an average of 85% or more.

What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders?  My encouragement for my fellow prefects would be to remember that there is no “i” in team. As long as we work together and all aim to leave the school better than we found it, nothing can stand in our way. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Who is your role model? Benny Speelman, a youth pastor at The Assembly Church in Graaff-Reinet. 

What are your plans after matric in 2023? My plans after matric are to study Psychology full-time, whereafter I would like to obtain a degree in Theology to work towards my goal of working in some form or ministry.

If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why? I would be The Flash. I think he has one of the best superpowers ever! Who wouldn’t want to run faster than the speed of light?

On a regular Saturday, you will find me at home with my family.
