Overview Sporting Achievements
Maritzburg College hosted local rivals Michaelhouse over the weekend. Although some fixtures had to be cancelled due to the weather, there was still plenty of great sporting competition between two strong schools. The 1st water polo team travelled to the Grey Bloem tournament with a gutsy and determined performance that saw them finish in 6th place.

Well done to College’s athletes who produced excellent results in the aQuelle series finishing 1st overall against 26 other schools, and the 10 boys competing in the 2nd league of ASA events secured four 1st place, five 2nd place and six 3rd place results.

Basketball
Although all the outdoor games were cancelled, College’s basketball teams won nine of their 12
games against Michaelhouse with all the A teams securing convincing victories. The 1st team worked well as a team to bring home a 93-57 win.

1st team report (Mr Jacques Wilcock, MIC: Basketball) The day was off to a cool and wet start with the outdoor fixtures having to be cancelled, forcing all the attention into the APMH. College found it difficult to manage their intensity giving away a lot of
unnecessary fouls early on putting Michaelhouse in the bonus for most of the first two quarters. Fortunately, a strong offensive performance saw College leading 44-29 at the half. It was a tough day in the office for the officials as the two teams battled it out resulting in over 50 fouls for the game. College’s captain N Ngcobo top scored with 23 points followed closely by C Fynn with 14 points. The team as a whole played well, with everyone contributing to allow a convincing win by 36 points, and a final score 93-57.

Cricket
Facing strong competition from Michaelhouse it was a weekend of rollercoaster results against Michaelhouse with College’s cricketers winning five of their nine matches. The 1st XI, U.16A and U.14A celebrated excellent wins, with College’s 1st XI bowling Michaelhouse out for 92 on Goldstones, before coasting to a 93/2 victory. Congratulations to Dom du Toit on his outstanding 5 wickets for 9 runs.
1st team report (Mr Robbie Coutt 1st XI coach) Maritzburg College welcomed Michaelhouse to Goldstones on a cool, overcast morning. Despite overnight rain, the pitch remained unaffected, though a damp outfield awaited the players.

Michaelhouse won the toss and opted to bat first. Samuel Hughes struck early with a sharp in-swinger, trapping the opener in front. Ewald Bester’s sharp fielding in the 4th over produced a crucial run-out before Hughes struck again in his 4th over, clean-bowling an opposition batter. A brief recovery saw Michaelhouse reach 66 for 3, but the introduction of Dom du Toit changed the
game. His 6-over spell yielded just 9 runs and a remarkable 5 wickets, dismantling the middle order.

Nathan Pembridge provided strong support, claiming 2 wickets in his 8-over spell. Michaelhouse collapsed to 92 all out in the 34th over College openers Daniel Nadasan and Bester safely negotiated a tricky 5-over period before lunch, reaching 18 without loss. After the break, Bester was run out after some sharp fielding, bringing Reece Willson to the crease. He and Nadasan added 44 before Willson fell to a catch down the leg side. Karl Dedekind joined his captain, scoring 17 off 11 balls, ensuring College chased down the target in the 25th over. Nadasan anchored the innings superbly, finishing unbeaten on 39 as the home team secured an 8-wicket victory on the stroke of tea.

Scores in brief
Michaelhouse 92 all out; Du Toit 5 for 9, Pembridge 2 for 14, Hughes 2 for 14
College 93 for 2; Nadasan 39*
College won by 8 wicket
