Jabulane Christian Academy (JCA) recently concluded its successful “Goes Green Week,” held from 2nd to 6th September 2024, marking an engaging celebration of environmental stewardship inspired by the six-day creation story. The event aimed to promote awareness among learners and the school community about caring for God’s creation while also encouraging creativity and hands-on participation.
Throughout the week, learners enthusiastically participated in a variety of projects designed to connect them with the environment and highlight their role as stewards of the earth. One of the standout initiatives was the plastic bottle tops and bread tag collection for The Sweetheart Foundation, which helps provide wheelchairs to those in need.
As part of the plant project, learners worked on growing vegetation around the school, culminating in the planting of various plants outside the Grade R and Grade 3 classrooms. The new greenery has significantly brightened the area, adding a vibrant touch of nature and reinforcing the importance of nurturing and growing God’s creation.
Perhaps the most imaginative activity of the week was the recycling project, where learners were challenged to create unique items symbolizing different days of the biblical creation story, using only recycled materials. This activity not only showcased the creativity of JCA students but also reinforced the importance of repurposing waste for constructive purposes.
Mr G Colin, principal of JCA, shared his thoughts on the importance of the week, stating, “It is an exciting time in our school when we get to guide our learners in God’s truth and open their eyes to the clear teaching of the Bible. ‘JCA Goes Green Week’ provides us with a unique opportunity to highlight the power and wisdom of our amazing God, who created the entire universe in six days by speaking it into being and man being made in God’s image. We should be good stewards of creation but also our time and the way we treat other human beings”
The week’s success would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support from parents, who contributed to making the various projects a reality. JCA hopes that the lessons learned during “Goes Green Week” will inspire students to continue practicing environmental stewardship in their daily lives.
