The English Olympiad 2025 was a remarkable event held on Tuesday, March 4th, marking the 50th edition of the National English Olympiad. Nine talented students participated in this prestigious competition, demonstrating their skills and understanding through a rigorous three-hour exam. During the contest, they addressed two essay questions centered around the theme “Love. Life. Land,” showcasing their ability to analyze and express complex ideas.
Preparation for the Olympiad involved extensive study of an eclectic anthology. This collection included works from renowned literary, cultural, and social figures such as Louise MacNeice, William Shakespeare, Finuala Dowling, Charlotte Brontë, Maya Angelou, Dylan Thomas, Sandile Dikeni, Johnny Clegg, Alan Paton, Nelson Mandela, and Thabo Mbeki. The anthology covered a broad historical spectrum, from 16th-century classics to contemporary voices of the 21st century. It also featured writings by young student authors, emphasizing literature’s ongoing relevance across different eras and cultures.
The event was more than a competition; it was a celebration of literature’s profound influence on our lives. While the results are awaited later in the year, the experience provided immense opportunities for growth, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the power of words. The organizers and mentors are immensely proud of the students for their dedication, bravery, and enthusiasm in embracing this challenging journey.
