Children from Western Cape and Austria meet in song

Cape Town, often described as the melting pot of cultures, will come alive with the universal language of music as young voices from Austria and South Africa unite in song. On the 22nd of February 2025, the renowned Grazer Kapellknaben Choir from Graz, Austria, will join the Cape Choral Academy (CCA) and two other local choirs in an unforgettable choral concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium.

The CCA, founded in 2023, is an innovative academic school using the power of music, especially choral music to foster a future generation of changemakers. Their unique approach integrates music with academic excellence, mentorship, and holistic development, empowering students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to become future leaders and entrepreneurs.

In the first two years of its existence, the CCA has performed on a weekly basis in either the Moederkerk of Stellenbosch or other venues in and around Greater Cape Town. It has also performed major works for choir and orchestra, such as Mozart’s Mass in G No. 1, Bach’s Cantata Ich freue mich in dir, Vivaldi’s Magnificat, and Die Kaapse Fantasie, composed by the learners and staff of the Cape Choral Academy.

The CCA further values the importance behind establishing a community inspired by cross-cultural learning and collaboration to honour the broad demographics reflected by the Western Cape and beyond the borders of South Africa. By sharing the stage with the boys from Austria and our neighbours, DF Malan High School and Gateway Primary School, a big leap is taken to celebrate the power behind diversity, creativity, and singing without borders.

Gateway Primary Boys’ Choir

This is the future of South Africa! The Grazer Kapellknaben, conducted by Matthias Unterkofler, was founded in 2003. This outstanding Austrian boys’ choir performs an extensive repertoire ranging from classical choral works by Mozart, Bruckner, and Schubert to opera productions and traditional Austrian folk music. Having performed extensively both in Austria and internationally, they are renowned for their musical excellence and emotive performances

DF Malan Chamber Choir, conducted by Jade Paige, consists of 28 talented singers from DFMalan’s school choir and their diverse repertoire includes Pop, Jazz, classical, and traditional music. They participate successfully in national competitions each year.

Jade Paige,

The Gateway Primary School Choir, conducted by Sugar Radu, is a remarkable young choir who distinguished itself with its outstanding vocal performances. They are proud to be the winners of the 2023 SASCE competition (Intermediate Phase Boys Choir).

Under the esteemed patronage of Her Excellency, the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to South Africa, Mag. Romana Königsbrun, this event celebrates the unifying power of music across cultures. All net proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities, reinforcing the spirit ofgiving and community upliftment through music and international collaboration.
